Sgt Hulka - Too sexy for his chainsaw? - Posted: 2/26/05 by Team Evolve
As we were cleaning up the office today, we found an August 2000 issue of PC Gamer that featured an article with Sgt Hulka in which he describes a fictitious issue of Playgirl that he's gonna pose for. Yeah, whatever Sarge.. Keep dreaming. If you missed that issue, you can check out a scan of the article in our media section. Read it if you dare, and let's hope Sarge kept his pants on for this one!

In PKA 3.0 Map News, SH released nine additional 3.0 maps. 9 conversions in one zip. Grab it here.

Map package Includes:
dubenigma_30-pka
cpm1_30-pka
chiroptera-pka
q3dm13-pka
q3dm4-pka (SMEAR THE BLUE QUEER!)
q3dm6-pka
q3dm9-pka
q3tourney2-pka
q3tourney3-pka
bot-covenant

NOTE: If you're hoping onto a Painkeep Arena server and you instantly get booted, check out Cov's map page and download the map you're missing. That's typically the issue with being booted, your missing the map they are currently playing.

Gas Station Map for PKA reviewed at LVL - Posted: 8/1/04 by Team Evolve
Anton, one of our favorite mappers for Painkeep Arena, has created quite a few addon levels for Painkeep arena, and we have just received word that one of his latest map "TNK Gas Station" has been reviewed by the folks at LVL. Here's a blurb from the review:
A large chunk of earth, with a gas station and a few taxis floats in the sky. Thats the setting for this Pain Keep Arena level. The map is essentially an open, space map with a realism theme. The game play is consistent with the theme in standard Q3A. With the Pain Keep mod, its a lot more fun. The size and openness of the map makes the Railgun a weapon of choice.
Head on over to LVL to read the full review, download the map, then hop onto a PainKeep Arena server with us!

New Maps & Old Demos posted! - Posted: 7/29/04 by Team Evolve

The demos for our Official Battlezone mission pack The Red Odyssey, as well as the demo for Zaero, our commercial mission pack for Quake II have been posted. The Red Odyssey demo will only run on early versions of Windows like 95 and 98. We can't guarantee it'll run on 2000 or XP. It's an old demo made in 1998, but a lot of people have asked for it, so it's now available.

We hope you download them and enjoy the hell out of them. Also, due to multiple requests, we've posted the source for Zaero. You can find it on the products page in the Zaero section. We hope all aspiring programmers can find out how we did all that cool stuff in Zaero and use the knowledge to make some cool games of their own some day!

In PainKeep Arena news, our lead mapper ThinG has been hard at work coming up some new maps for your fragging pleasure. Expect custom textures, shaders, models, music and new sounds! It'll be a fairly large download but well worth it! We'll be posting screenshots of all the hot PKA action soon!

PainKeep Arena Interview - Posted: 8/1/01 by Team Evolve
The Team Evolve mod team first came to gamers' attention with their PainKeep mod for Quake, which become one of the most popular multiplayer mods for id Software's debut game in the Quake series. After going the commerical route with add-ons for Quake II (Zaero) and BattleZone (Red Odyssey) Team Evolve went back to their roots for PainKeep Arena, a remake of that classic mod for Quake III Arena. With the full version of the mod now released, HomeLAN caught up with Team Evolve head man Robert "Sgt. Hulka" Waring to get the scoop on the present and future plans for Team Evolve.

Internal Code Released - Posted: 7/10/01 by Team Evolve
PKA 2.5 has been released internally for some testing. There are quite a few code changes, but here's a taste of what we are testing right now. There is a new alternative feature on the dragon, a bit of defense added for the Chain Lightning Gun, respawns have been set to allow you to spawn furthest from where you just died, (this will reduce instant frags by your recent opponent), the autosentries will no longer shoot at spectators, nailgun damage has been improved a little bit, dropped weapons will only stay around half the amount of time they used to, and a Launched Gravity Well will bounce more!!!

There are many more coding changes that have been made and you'll be able to taste them all very soon if all goes well in testing this week, and judging from all the testing we did yesterday, it won't be long.

PKA Map Update:
If you did or did not know, let me just remind you, the full version of PainKeep Arena has 20 maps. That's 19 DM maps and the HUB. Of these maps all but two are basically ready to go and the HUB has been coded to allow any of them to work with the new release, so expect more maps to be released shortly as well.

PainKeep Arena Review & New Maps Soon! - Posted: 7/6/01 by Team Evolve
Here's a blurb from a recent PainKeep Arena review, pass it on!

We're not going to go into each and every single PKA map, mainly because I'd be here for weeks typing away trying to give you a review on the maps that would do them justice. The arenas are very well designed and keep the action flowing smoothly on almost all of the maps that are included in the beta. All of them include cool little effects and they all have special sounds in them. This mod is worth it almost just for the maps in my opinion.

Also, new maps very soon, new code base, VERY, VERY SOON!!!

We're almost done with all maps and code. An internal release of the new code is due 7/8 and if all goes well we'll release within 10 days as well as some new maps within the next week.

Sgt Hulka just finished compiling PKA12 (The Other Side) as well as a minor revamp of PKA1 (The Prison) based on player feedback. PKA1 has not been changed much, mostly minor cosmetic changes and a few lighting changes. PKA12 is more of a night level with some dark areas and a nice night skyline. All other maps are roughly at the 98% completed stage. When you see what we've been working on finishing, you'll need a new drool cup!

PainKeep Arena Review - Posted: 4/18/01 by Team Evolve
Dole out massive dollop of abuse, and have fun doing it. In my humble opinion (as if), Pain Keep Arena is the only good reason to own a copy of Quake 3 arena.

It's 2 am and I have to get up in about 2 hours. Why am I up? Pain Keep Arena. PKA has one simple goal, destroy the other guy. It's all about the frag count baby. In a world gone "Team play" crazy, it's nice to see someone taking time out to make the Deathmatch paradigm valid again. But unlike other games or mods, PKA says "Beat em with your mad skills, or just outthink the sorry sack of guts". Yes good readers, in PKA the mind is the weapon. You get the weapons, tool, and traps to make your way to the top of the score board. It's all about how you implement them. Lets take a quick look at what Pain Keep Arena has to offer.

PainKeep Arena Beta 2 Mirrors - Posted: 3/26/01 by Team Evolve
I'm not sure of the size or the filename yet, but while Ergo and the rest of the team are getting the pieces together and the install gets written, by yours truly I might add, we're looking for a few mirrors to put this puppy out on.

WarT over at OzQuaker.com has already volunteered his bandwidth, and we're always looking for more. If you'd like to mirror this, I'm going to post links to mirrors in the following way:

<group/site>    <city>         <country>
Team Evolve     Indianapolis   USA

So I will need to know the name of the group/site and the name of the city & country where the SERVER which will have the download on it is physically located (not your group's HQ, unless they're the same). If you would like to provide the URL to your website I'll put that up too for the favor.

I'm not yet sure of the final name of the *.exe, but let's assume it will be "pkabeta2.exe". With the requested information, please also include the actual URL this will reside at, such as

www.whatever.com/files/pkabeta2.exe

You can notify me through email: spider@teamevolve.com

I'll send you an ACK when you get the info to me, then another mass mailing to everyone who's "signed up" (heh) sometime late on Sunday letting you know where the *.exe is. This will be a Win32 install. I can let you know of a *.zip if you need another platform, but that will be just an unzip-and-copy type thingy. Remember, this is BETA 2, nothing's gone gold yet.

Painkeep Arena Beta 1 Review - Posted: 1/31/01 by Team Evolve
Frag-Energy just posted a review of Painkeep Arena beta 1, a MOD for Quake3. It takes a closer look at all the sides of this wonderful MOD; new weapons, new maps, new pick ups.

Here’s a snippit:
"Overall the new weapons/pickups if used intelligently add a whole new level of playablilityto Q3 Death Match, as well as a whole new set of tactical options. The anti-personal devices for instance is something that is long overdue in Q3 Deathmatch. No longer can you mercilously pursue happless victims wittling down their strength. They might have a nasty surprise in the form of a Gravity well when you turn the next corner." Check the article here

Team Evolve Brings the PainKeep - Posted: 05/07/00 by Team Evolve
GA-Source has spoken with Team Evolve's Level Designer Robert E. Waring to get the low-down on their upcoming modification for id Software's 3D accelerated multiplayer first-person shooter, Quake III Arena.
PainKeep Arena is a straight Deathmatch mod that promises to give the Quake community what they want and much more. "I like to say that we're once again showing id how Deathmatch should be done," Waring confidently says. Now if that statement sounds bold, Mr. Waring's credentials definitely seem to be able to back up his words.
